What is a Slot

Posted on by

A slot was, originally, a gambling machine that had three or more reels which were spun when a lever was pulled or a button was pressed. Now, with the invention of computers and screens, these have developed somewhat and can now be played online in the form of video slots, which have the same principles of gameplay, but which work a little more like a video game.

Each slot machine, or video slot, has its own set of symbols which cover the reels. The player either physically inserts a coin into the slot (hence the name) or deposits an amount electronically (in the case of an online or video slot) and presses, pulls or clicks a button or lever to spin the reels. Players then receive payouts if the reels stop at a point where the symbols which are showing match each other and have landed on one of the slot’s paylines (a pattern across the reels, usually 5, 10, 20 or 40 – depending on the slot and the number of reels).

Slots symbols vary from slot to slot, especially online and video slots which can be based on almost any theme imaginable: cars, dinosaurs, tv shows, movies, David Hasselhoff – you name it, there’s a slot that has been inspired by it! Most slots have symbols which pay more than other symbols so the more matching symbols a player spins, and the more valuable the symbol, the bigger the payout will be!
Slot machines were first invented in the 1800s and classic slot symbols haven’t changed all that much since then. Old-school slot symbols which are still very often used are: card value symbols, stars, bells, bar symbols, sevens and fruit symbols including fruits like cherries, watermelons, strawberries, grapes, oranges, lemons and plums. Of course, with themed video slots, the symbols have become much more widely variable and intricate!

In most casinos, land-based and online, slot machines are the most popular and most-played type of game. Part of the fun of slot games is that they don’t require any thought or effort on the part of the player, not like with, say, Poker or Blackjack where players have to strategize and calculate their moves. You just place your bets, press the button and pure chance will determine how the reels stop. And, now, with the invention of video slots, players can enjoy even more immersive and effortlessly entertaining experiences.

Games developers, such as NetEnt, have created some slots that are simply beyond compare and take gaming to a whole new level of entertainment. For example, Gonzo’s Quest by NetEnt is not only a slot but it’s also almost a movie! Players follow the story of Gonzo, the Spanish explorer, as he goes in search of the golden city, the legendary El Dorado, where players may be lucky enough to play their free spins in! Another enchanting, film-like slot by NetEnt is their video slot: The Wish Master. In this slot, players enter into a dark cave and those who find the genie’s lamp can rub it to free the genie inside and be granted three wishes by the genie, the Wish Master himself, which will help them get those desired big wins!
